Let’s be honest: your salon’s success depends significantly on your employees’ talents and skills, but finding the best team isn’t always that easy. There’s huge competition for qualified stylists, and it’s not uncommon for rival salon owners to try to entice talented employees away from one another by promising a better payment offer and better work conditions. The challenge for salon owners is building up a loyal team with extremely qualified stylists that stay long term. Here’s how to hire, and keep the best team!

Competency

As a salon owner, you should only hire officially certified stylists. Think about a minimum competency level your candidate must meet and have a look at additional techniques and skills they’ve learned in their career. This can be, for example, color classes they attended, courses organized by professional brands, or styling classes with famous hair artists. You need to make sure your potential employees will be able to provide outstanding services and offer what your clients are looking for. If you think a specific stylist might be a good match for your team, consider setting up a trial in order to get an impression of the customer service and skills your candidate provides.

Values

Aside from meeting your salon requirements on a professional level, stylists must also match your salon’s core values. In order to turn a potential member into a loyal, long-term team member, they need to share your salon’s values. One way to know your stylists share the same values is to regularly remind your staff of the vision and mission your salon brand has taken on. See who is contributing most to those ideals and who wants to be a part of the vision as much as you do. Questions to ask would be, do you think your potential employee can reflect those values on a daily basis? Do you think they can carry out your salon’s values to your clients and other staff members? Do they display high levels of integrity? If yes, this employee might be the perfect addition to your team!

Personality

To create a positive environment, your new hires have to fit into your team of stylists. Their personality has to go along with the workflow of your salon, in order to maintain a healthy balance with existing employees and clients. With that in mind, you should look for a strong personality with leadership skills and humility. Your hires need to understand their own strengths and weaknesses, accept critique and always be willing to learn and improve. At the same time, they should be supportive, humble and understand their clients and colleagues. If your potential employee seems to be selfish, grumpy, sluggish or insensitive, you better keep on searching for new team members.
